An offset lithograph poster in commemoration of the first international Earth Day celebration by Robert Rauschenberg, printed in 1970. Published by Castelli Graphics, this poster was made by Rauschenberg to benefit the American Environment Foundation in Washington, D.C. The work is signed and dated in plate to the lower center. Presented under glass, it is housed in a black wood frame. A frame label is adhered to the verso.
Although this was not the first time Robert Rauschenberg expressed environmental concerns in his art, this was the first time the artist created a mass-produced poster to convey social concerns. He first made a lithograph and collage in an edition of 50 to commemorate the first Earth Day, then created a visually similar poster in an edition of 300.
