An early 20th-century oil painting on canvas of a coastal scene by well-listed American artist Walter Granville-Smith (1870 – 1938). Portrayed with a pastel palette and textural impressionistic brushstrokes, this coastal scene features an older gentleman and a young boy with some fishing boats on the water shore, and sailboats visible in the distance. The work is signed to the lower left. It is presented in an antique gilt and gesso frame with foliate moulding and a canvas liner.
Known for his impressionist landscape and figural paintings, Walter Granville-Smith studied under Walter Satterlee, J. Carroll Beckwith and Willard Metcalf; he received training at the Art Students League of New York and the Academie Julian in Paris. His illustrations appeared in several publications such as Harper’s and Scribner’s. His work has been exhibited and collected by multiple instutitions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.
