An oil painting on board titled Through the Woods by well-listed Ohio-based artist Robert Whitmore (1890-1979), dated 1922. This work features a gestural woodland scene comprised of energetic brushwork and rich pigments. The piece is signed ‘Robert H. Whitmore’ to the lower right. Additionally to the verso, an empty envelope is inscribed with artist’s name and date. The work is presented in a gilt wooden frame.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
