An oil painting on canvas of a creek landscape by well-listed Indiana-based artist Varaldo Cariani (1891 – 1969). Potrayed with daubs of loose brushstrokes, this impressionistic work features a man fishing in a rocky creek surrounded by thick overgrown foliage and a dense forest of full trees. The work is signed to the lower left. It is presented in a gilt and gesso frame with large acanthus leaf motifs to the corners. It is inscribed to the verso, some of which provides provenance of the work. A label from Lyman Bros. is also adhered to the verso.

Associated with Brown County of Indiana, Varaldo Cariani was born in Italy and emigrated to the United States with his family at a young age. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York with Frank DuMond. Especially known for his landscapes and floral still lifes, he was a memeber of the Hoosier Salon, the Indiana Artists Club, and the Bown County Art Gallery Association. Varaldo was signficantly one of twenty Indiana artists selected to exhibit their work at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933. In addition, he was awarded many honors for his art throughout his life.
