An oil painting with applied plastic buttons on wood board by listed Folk artist Benny Carter (1943 – 2014). A recurring subject portrayed by the artist, this folk composition features the Statue of Liberty surrounded by a starry sky with airplanes and the sea populated with ships, boats, sea animals. The New York City skyline visible to the upper right. The work is signed to the lower right; it remains unframed.
Benny didn’t begin creating art until 1991 after being laid off from his job. As a self-taught artist, he is known for his mixed media works made of found objects. Some of his favorite subjects include the Statue of Liberty, the New York City skyline, Biblical stories, and farm scenes. His work has been exhibited in multiple institutions including the American Visionary Museum of Art in Baltimore, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art in Alabama, and the Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University, among others.
