An oil painting on canvas of a lady in the woods by Robert Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979). This piece depicts a woman entering a wooded area at night with stylized trees and dark hues. The artist’s signature is present to the verso of the painting. This piece is presented in a wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.
Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
