A mid-century gouache and watercolor painting on paper by Italian artist Antonio Francione (20thcentury), after the original fresco titled Bacchus – God of Wine located in The House of Vetii, Pompeii. This skillfully rendered painting depicts a cherub enticing goats, pulling a chariot carrying a reclining nude woman, with a vessel of water, as Bacchus follows behind. This work is marked ‘Pompei’ in white pigment to the lower left and is signed to the lower right. It is presented behind a black mat, under glass, in a wood frame with a gold-tone face, black sides and a hanging wire to the verso. A handwritten label indicating the title and location of the original fresco is attached to the verso.
