Antique Late Victorian Carved Oak and Circassian Walnut Sideboard by Maple & Co.
Item Details
An antique late Victorian carved oak and Circassian walnut sideboard by Maple & Co., circa 1890. The two-part case features an upper section with a bowfront, dentil-molded cornice above four aligned, paneled doors over a mirror-backed arcade with Ionic capitals and fluted shafts. The scrolled-foliate, relief-carved doors are separated by four pairs of applied pilasters and each cabinet opens to one removable shelf. The lower section has a burled top and side panels with two aligned and dovetailed, frieze drawers over four paneled doors interrupted by three fluted pilasters. Similar to the upper section, the paneled drawer and door fronts are relief carved with scrolled foliates and fitted with brass and copper-tone hardware. Each two-door cabinet opens to three drawers, including a felt-lined flatware drawer and a zinc-lined cellarette drawer. One door interior retains a plaque reading ‘From / Maple & Co / Limited / London & Paris.’ The whole piece rises on a molded base ending in lobed, bun feet.
