An etching on paper of a girl with a fan by Robert Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979). This piece depicts a pale, young woman wearing an ornate hairstyle rendered in thick lines against a dark background. The artist’s signature is present in plate to the lower right and the artist’s estate stamp is to the verso. This piece is presented mounted to foam board.
Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
