An oil painting on paperboard of a seated figure by Robert Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979). This piece depicts a seated female figure wearing an orange sweater rendered in saturated colors and rough brushstrokes. The artist’s signature is present to the lower right corner of the painting. This piece is presented mounted on foam board.
Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
