An oil painting on canvas of a figural landscape by well-listed Ohio-based artist Robert Whitmore (1890-1979). Portrayed in a post-impressionistic style, this work features a nude figure wading through a pond in the middle of a forest. Dark hues are contrasted with vibrant phosphorescent colors throughout the trees, water, and sky. The work is not signed, however the artist’s estate stamp is marked to the canvas verso. A handwritten inscription is also present to the stretcher verso and the painting remains unframed.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirment in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
