Circa 1900 S. Kirk & Son Co. "Landscape" Sterling Silver Tea and Coffee Service
Item Details
A turn-of-the-century sterling silver coffee and tea service by S. Kirk & Son Co of Baltimore, MD in the coveted Landscape pattern, alternately known as the Castle and Etruscan patterns.
First designed circa 1840, this pattern is an amalgamation of styles from the English Baroque to the Rococo. The coffee pot, teapot, creamer, covered sugar bowl and waste bowl are highly decorated in the Victorian Castle Ware style featuring repoussé towers and follies nestled into idyllic landscapes. The tapering bodies rise on flaring pedestal bases ornamented with floral wreaths, and the angular handles have bone insulators and cast ram’s heads at the shoulders in the French Neoclassical fashion, a favorite Kirk motif.
Each piece is marked at the base S. Kirk & Son Co. 925/1000, 262, which dates the set from 1896, where the ‘Co.’ was introduced, to 1914, where the fineness mark changed to ‘sterling’. The total approximate weight is 112.109 ozt.
