Antique Transitional Federal-to-Empire Cherry Butler's Chest of Drawers
Item Details
An antique transitional Federal-to-Empire cherry butler’s chest of drawers, second quarter 19th century. The paneled case features a rectangular top above a fall-front, secretaire drawer opening to five drawers and eight valenced pigeonholes. The writing surface extends over three dovetailed and graduated, long drawers. The scratchbeaded fronts are fitted with brass escutcheons and oval, shell-embossed pulls before poplar linings. The chest rises on short, ring-turned legs ending in tapered feet.

Condition
- top with some stains/marks and it probably had a rear, three-quarter gallery, which is now missing; secretaire interior missing central, prospect door; some shrinkage cracks, mostly to side panels; front, left foot with a small break/loss; drawer runners built up; pulls possibly replaced (later screws visible on drawer interiors); drawers retain interior lock plates but no key; other scattered scratches and imperfections as would be expected with age and use.
