Antique Poplar Lift-Top Writing Desk

Item Details

An antique poplar lift-top writing desk, 19th century. The case features a narrow, rectangular top behind a hinged lid, which opens to a shallow, storage well. The desk rises on square, tapered legs.

Condition

- top and lid with finish wear/losses and stain/discoloration; lid with shrinkage cracks reinforced by later, wooden strips on the underside; exterior and interior of lid with a few later, incised marks/letters; front, left side of apron with a small hole; scattered/former pest damage (worming); back, right leg repaired; some rust to hinges; front edge of storage well with some mouse chew (only visible when lid is lifted); some small losses to feet; other minor imperfections as would be expected with age and use.
