Scottish Arts & Crafts Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard by Wylie & Lochhead Circa 1880
Item Details
A circa 1880 Arts & Crafts mahogany sideboard by Scottish cabinet makers Wylie & Lochhead. The impressive mahogany sideboard displays inlaid floral detailing at the doors and banded inlay at the drawers and glass cabinet. It is constructed in two pieces with the lower cabinet featuring three drawers with shield form pulls over two locked cabinets, one with a lined flatware drawer and the other a fitted drawer for bottles. The upper cabinet offers storage at the center enclosed by two convex glass doors then flanked by open shelves with more floral inlay decoration and candle stands at each side. The sideboard is elevated on faceted cylindrical legs ending in a bun foot.
The Scottish cabinet makers Wylie & Lochhead were renowned for both their aesthetic sensibilities and a very high level of skilled craftsmanship during the Edwardian periods. Three of their well-known designers: E.A Taylor, John Ednie and George Logan were considered the best of the era and their work was displayed at the Glasgow International Exhibition and the Turin International Exhibition where they were extremely well received.
Provenance: Acquired from Florian Papp, 2006.
