Antique Hand-Knotted Persian Afshar Area Rug
Item Details
An antique Persian Afshar area rug. This tribal rug is made of wool pile on a goat hair foundation, in an abrashed palette of midnight blue, terracotta, cream, brick red, sapphire, cornsilk, teal, coral and mocha. It features a complex design of medallions within medallions beginning with a set of hooked diamonds and partial diamonds arranged inside of a stepped polygon with patterned outlining. These motifs occupy the center of a terracotta lozenge with triple pendants at each end, the lozenge resting on an abrashed sapphire field amid double ram’s horn and rosette motifs. Framing the field are five lively borders, including zigzag patterns and ram’s horn/dart motifs. Selvedges are overcast in alternating colors. Ends finish with warp fringe made of ivory goat hair. The rug is unlabeled.
