A limited edition photograph print titled Luncheonette – Oakland Beach by American photographer Carmel Vitullo (b. 1925). From the artist’s 1950-60s Rhode Island series featured in Bert Gallery’s online exhibit Street Scenes & Visions of Humanity, this archival print was made from a digital scan of the original 1960s negative. The photographer exhibits a candid Americana moment of men lined up on bar stools along a restaurant counter. Photographs from this series reflect Vitullo’s ability to capture a sense of belonging and collective identity in her anonymous subjects. The work is signed, titled, and numbered 5 out of an edition of 20 to the verso of the photo; it is also marked by Bert Gallery to the photo verso. Presented between two layers of white matting, the work remains unframed. It is inscribed and stamped by Bert Gallery, Inc. to the mat verso.
Carmel Vitullo was raised in Federal Hill, a small Italian community of Rhode Island. After studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, she pursued photography at the New York Institute of Photography. Particularly inspired by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, she adopted a snapshot, documentary aesthetic photographing various neighborhoods, communities, and people, including jazz icons Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Vitullo describes her work as ‘street photography,’ capturing the vernacular beauty in the fleeting moments and local subjects of the 1950s and 60s urban landscape. Vitullo’s debut was in The Family of Man exhibition by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1955. Her work has also been represented by the RISD Museum, the Bert Gallery, the Newport Art Museum, and the Block Island Historical Society, among other institutions.
