An abstract relief monoprint by listed Indian-British artist Siramdasu Venkata Rama Rao (b. 1936), created in 1965. This work features an intersecting matrix of curving blue, green, and yellow channels and lines. The work is signed ‘SV Rama Rao’ by hand in graphite to the central left; it is also dated and numbered 1/1 to the central left. The work remains unmounted and unframed.
Born in southern India, Siramdasu Venkata Rama Rao studied accounting and banking before pursuing a career in art. He attended the Madras School of Arts and Crafts, present day Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, then immigrated to the U.K. and studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts. Later, he attended the MFA program at the University of Cincinnati, where he also served as a teaching assistant. Rao is especially known for his abstract Cubist inspired compositions and his work has been represented by numerous prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others.
