Born in Rochester, New York, Emile Albert Gruppé was the son of landscape painter Charles Paul Gruppé. He attended The Hague in the Netherlands, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League in New York. Known for his impressionistic depictions of New England landscapes and marine scenes, Gruppé’s work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the White House, and the Hickory Museum of Art, among many others.
