1850 First Edition "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne

An 1850 antique hardcover copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel The Scarlet Letter. This is the first edition, with ‘reduplicate’ to page 21 instead of ‘repudiate’, published by Ticknor, Reed, and Fields of Boston. It features blind stamped brown cloth binding, with gilt lettering to the spine. There is a gift inscription to the front flyleaf dated March 26th, 1850.

Condition

- heavy cover wear with chipping to bottom and top edges of spine, spine cloth is threadbare at places, not affecting gilt titles; front board is slightly bowed with toning and some staining; heavily bumped corners and edgewear; prominent water stain to top of pages; loose hinges; scattered foxing/stains to interior.
