Smith was a member of the Indian River School painters, who were a collection of mostly African-American Florida artists and students in the mid-20th century. The central figure of the group was Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906 – 1990) who was an influential member of the The Highwaymen and regarded as the ‘Dean of Florida Landscape Artists’ for his backwoods Florida landscapes.

- some wear and scratches to frame; some accretions to crevices of frame.
