Item Details
A receipt document signed (all extra handwriting penned in the hand of the signee) by patriot Roger Sherman. This piece of correspondence is an authorization for payment of $750 Continental currency to Roger Sherman, signed by Robert Niles. A reply is written at the bottom of the document and signed by Roger Sherman. Robert Niles, captain of the schooner Spy purchased by the Connecticut colony, protected the coast during the French and Indian War and is remembered most notably for successfully fighting off enemies on an ocean voyage to deliver a copy of the Treaty of Paris to Benjamin Franklin while Franklin resided in that city. Roger Sherman was a statesman and lawyer, the only founding father who signed all four documents: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. This document is presented behind a black mat, behind glass, in a black and gold frame ready to hang. Philadelphia, April 5, 1777 and Hartford, October 16, 1777. 1 page, 4to. The piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.
