Item Details

A signed charcoal drawing on paper of a landscape by well-listed American landscape artist John Ross Key (Maryland/Washington, D.C.; 1837 – 1920), grandson of Francis Scott Key, author of The Star Spangled Banner. This drawing, originally titled The Millpond, depicts a view over a placid body of water with trees in silhouette against a cloudy sky, rendered in soft marks on toned paper. The work is signed by hand to the lower left. It is presented under an off-white mat in a gold tone wood frame without glass, wired to hang. Per consignor, this piece originates from a mid-century exhibition of the artist’s works at the Jocelyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, hosted by members of Key’s immediate family members.
Key’s works are represented in the collections of many reputed museums across the country, including the White House Historical Association; Fine Art Museums of San Francisco; University of Michigan Art Museum; Missouri History Museum; Morris Museum of Art; and Greenville County Museum of Art.
