1921 Signed Florence Harding Marion National Bank Check

A check filled out and signed by First Lady Florence Harding. This check from the Marion National Bank of Marion, Ohio is dated to November 29th, 1921; it is made out to Mrs. A. F. Vitale for five dollars for ‘Animal Rescue Work.’ A stamp to the verso reads ‘National Society for Humane Regulation of Vivisection.’ A suffragist and the business manager of her husband’s small-town newspaper, Florence Harding was an activist First Lady. She broke many precedents, among them writing a brief article in a public forum, the popular women’s magazine McCalls. Harding was known for her elegant parties and was the first First Lady to vote.
