1920 Signed Florence Harding Marion National Bank Check
Item Details
A vintage check signed by former first lady Florence Kling Harding (1860-1924). This check, written in the amount of five dollars, is drawn on The Marion National Bank, paying dues for the Congressional Club. It is dated December 20, 1920, and signed to the lower right corner. The check is stamped and endorsed to the verso. The social club was founded in 1908 for wives and daughters of elected officials. A suffragist and the business manager of her husband’s small-town newspaper, Florence Harding was an activist First Lady. She broke many precedents, among them writing a brief article in a public forum, the popular women’s magazine McCalls. Harding was known for her elegant parties and was the first First Lady to vote.
