A postcard of US President Grant, with an etching of Martha Jefferson Randolph. This lot features a postcard bearing the hand-colored image of former US President Ulysses S. Grant and his family taken on June 19, 1885, as he convalesced on the porch of their cottage at Mount McGregor, New York at a time when Grant was rushing to finish his memoirs while enduring his terminal illness of throat cancer; he died in the cottage just days after completing his memoirs. The back of the postcard bears a handwritten message and a one cent George Washington stamp postmarked on December 9, 1915. Also included is an 1881 J. Rogers engraving of a young Martha ‘Patsy’ Jefferson Randolph, daughter of President Thomas Jefferson. The engraving is presented unframed.
Condition
- postcard has some edge wear, foxing, and has been written and postmarked; some tears to the postcard; unframed engraving has discoloration, edge and corner wear, and three small tears to the top.
