1934 Franklin D. Roosevelt Mantel Clock
Item Details
A Franklin D. Roosevelt mantel clock. This metal clock was produced in 1934 in order to commemorate and promote the passing of the repeal of Prohibition following the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment in December 1933. The metal case bears an image of Roosevelt to the top, with National Recovery Administration Chairman Hugh Johnson to the lower left, and Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, the first woman to hold a Cabinet position in US history, to the lower right, each with their names. The frame also bears Art Deco decorations, candlestick style lights at the shoulders, and the words ‘The Spirit of the U.S.A.’ to the bottom, below an etched eagle. The central face of the clock bears an image of Roosevelt behind a bar at a drinking establishment, mixing himself a drink, as a reference to the end of Prohibition with ‘Made in U.S.A. © 1934’ to the top and ‘United Clock Corp., Brooklyn, N.Y.’ to the bottom. This electric clock includes a power cord to the back. This piece is similar to another that sits in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington DC, the link to which is below.
