J.H. Richards Oil Painting on Velvet of Taos Pueblo Christmas Eve Bonfire Scene

Item Details

A circa 1960s oil painting on velvet by American artist J.H. Richards (20th-century). The folk art-style piece depicts the annual Christmas Eve bonfires held at the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. The dark evening landscape includes a scene of pueblo dwellings, a Catholic church and a starlit sky, which stand in contrast with the light of many small, bright fires and figures wrapped in colorful blankets. The work is signed ‘JH Richards, Taos NM’ in paint to the lower left. It is presented without glass in a gold tone wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso. The frame backing includes a note from the artist that reads ‘Use a 150 watt household bulb to light this panting.’
