Antique Hand-Knotted Persian Mashhad Area Rug
Item Details
A large antique Persian Mashhad area rug. This gorgeous wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of midnight blue, sapphire, ruby, rose, cream and camel with prominent tangerine highlights. It begins with a large round medallion, which encloses a series of nested medallions most of which are spoked with palmettes. The medallions rest on a ruby inner field populated with boteh, flowers, palmettes, leaves and vines, elements that continue in all phases of the field, including in deep spandrels grounded in sapphire and tangerine. Framing the field are eight borders, including an elaborate herati main border filled with palmettes and flowers over midnight blue. Minor borders feature crisp floral meander patterns over ivory or sapphire. The outer guard border is midnight blue. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with applied ivory cotton skirts and fringe. The rug is unlabeled.
