Antique Viaticum Sick Call Altar Box
Item Details
An antique oak sick-call box, circa the late 1890’s to early 1900’s. This piece features a plaster figurine depicting the Pietà, inset into a shrine with a reverse painted glass front embellished with imagery of angels at the corners, columns with symbolic imagery down the sides, and the phrase “Blessed Be Thy Holy Name” at the bottom. Below the shrine a hinged door featuring a framed image of The Last Supper drops down to form a small altar with metal candlestick holders at the sides. Two additional candleholders are also included. It also provides a space to store the small ritual objects involved in the viaticum eucharist ritual. These boxes were designed to be inset into a wall; a wire has been added to this box for hanging. Additional information about these boxes can be found at the link listed below.
Condition
- finish loss at bottom of wood frame; dirt and residue to surface; cracks in lower left of glass; design flaking off of glass panel.
