Vintage Alfredo Barbini Murano "Scavo" Glass Vase

Item Details

A vintage glass vase by the Alfredo Barbini glassworks of Murano, Italy. This vessel is composed with a elongated, narrow neck and bulbous, ovular body rendered in translucent blue scavo glass. The piece is accented on either side with mottled brown and periwinkle bands which stretch from the lip to the foot. It is marked with a label to the body and incised signature to the base: ‘Barbini Murano.’ Scavo, meaning unearthed, denotes a chemical process that creates a weathered surface, reminiscent of archaic glass. The process was favored by artist Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007), who founded the glassworks in 1950. This piece is likely dated c. 1960s-1980s.
