A Crissey Mechanical Ability Test machine. In 1949, a series of twenty-five mechanical aptitude tests were created to test human subjects’ mechanical abilities. The tests were sponsored by the Office of Naval Research in conjunction with other research institutes such as the General Research and Development Co. and The Psychometric Laboratory of The University of Chicago. This particular machine was created as part of test 19 of the study, authored by Orlo L. Crissey. The piece includes a camshaft driven by a hand operated wheel which raises and lowers four different pistons. It rests on a wooden base and retains its original carrying case. It retains its original metal label marked ‘General Research and Development Co., Fenton, Michigan’ with Model ‘MAT’ and Type ‘3’.
