An oil painting on canvas by German-born American artist Carl Christian Brenner (1838-1888). After his family emigrated to America and eventually settled in Louisville, Kentucky, he began seriously painting in the 1870s, working on views of parks, rivers and forests. This landscape painting depicts a lake in the mountains with tree-covered slopes and detailed foliage, possibly in the Cumberland Mountains, for which he is well-known for painting. It is signed to the lower left and dated 1887. This piece is presented in a gilt wood frame with molded foliate ornamentation and wire to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- to Fair; craquelure in the paint throughout; signature very faded; minor marks and scratches throughout frame with back of frame showing age.
