Late 19th Century Hand Painted Cast Iron Safe by The Victor Safe & Lock Co.
Item Details
A late 19th century hand-painted cast iron safe. This cast iron safe has a black finish with a hand-painted brick red front frame and the name ‘J. Edelstein & Co.’ to the front. The door has pinstripe edging and a hand-painted floral emblem, and the words ‘The Victor Safe & Lock Co, Cincinnati, O.’ in script letters below the lock. The combination lock is stamped with ‘OCT 2 88’ and the serial number 103944 and the door opens on reinforced hinges to reveal interior storage with a wooden locking door, a drawer, two shelves, and an open area on a carpeted base, with the words ‘Patented Oct. 11, 1887; Nov. 1 1887 – June 16, 1891’ on the door. This heavy safe rests of four wheeled trucks, and also includes a handwritten combination note, an ‘Important Notice’ from the makers, and an identification tag from the New England Registry Bureau of Boston, Massachusetts.
