A set of four 19th-century engravings on paper relating to French leader Napoléon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821). Featured are three portraits of Napoleon, including a circa 1880 engraving of Bonaparte in military dress after James Barton Longacre (1794 – 1869), a portrait of Napoleon as a young lieutenant of artillery after Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) and A. Blanchard, and a portrait of Napoleon wearing a bicorne hat. Also included is a framed steel engraving titled The Napoleon Column on the Place Vendôme in Paris after C. Reiss and R. Metzeroth, taken from a printing of the circa 1850s book titled Meyer’s Universum, or Views of the Most Remarkable Places and Objects of All Countries, edited by Charles A. Dana.
Condition
- toning, discoloration and foxing to each print and mat board; wear, small tears and creases to edges of unframed pieces; edge wear and scuffing to frame.
