Austine Wood Comarow Polage Lightbox "Volcano #2"
Item Details
Mixed Media
An early Polage mixed media lightbox by artist Austine Wood Comarow titled Volcano #2. Austine Wood Comarow is the creator and inventor of the Polage art form. Her unique process combines cellulose and a polarizing filter that when illuminated her designs come to life. Volcano #2 appears to be an etched, somewhat grainy volcano but when illuminated it transforms into a multidimensional and multi-color active volcano beneath a glowing, smoky sky. The Polage disc is etched ‘Volcano #2 ’Austine Wood © 1986’ at the lower edge. Designed to rest on small supports while the polarized beam projects from the rear. The hand-built lightbox is framed in oak and covered in matte black material. Hardware is affixed for hanging and the base is footed for tabletop display.
