1857 "Letters and Notes on the North American Indians" in Two Volumes

A pair of antique hardcover volumes, titled Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians by George Caitlin, published 1857 by Willis P. Hazard of Philadelphia, complete in two volumes. Caitlin was a writer and painter who traveled the American West painting portraits of Native subjects. The work is a travel narrative of eight years he spent in the west from 1832-1839, and is divided into letters rather than chapters. It is illustrated with steel engravings, many of which are after Caitlin’s own drawings. Both volumes are bound in dark brown cloth hardcovers with embossed and gilt designs.

Condition

- light cover wear; normal paper discoloration; scattered foxing but overall clean interiors; hinges slightly loose but overall good considering age.
