Signed Presentation Copy of George McClellan's "Campaign in Western Virginia"

An important presentation copy of the Report of Major-General George B. McClellan, Army of the Potomac, August 4th 1863, with an Account of the Campaign in Western Virginia, by American Civil War general George B. McClellan, published 1864 by Sheldon and Company of New York. It is hardcover, a large-paper copy with inscription of McClellan to to front flyleaf, with a personal dedication addressed to ‘His Excellency, General Count von Moltke, Chief of Staff etc. etc. with the sincere respect of George McClellan, Jun/69.’ Helmuth von Moltke, a Prussian general and military strategist, apparently read the Report and had visited McClellan in 1867. This copy is part of a limited edition of 250 large paper copies, and bears a Library of Congress surplus stamp to the copyright page. It is bound in a black cloth hardcover (later replacement), with a protective transparent plastic outer sleeve, and comes in a protective outer box. A certificate of authenticity from Peter L. Stern & Co., Antiquarian Booksellers, is included.
