Antique Caplock Kentucky Long Rifle
Item Details
A circa early to mid-19th century antique Kentucky long rifle, with a caplock action. The plate by the action is marked ‘H.W. Delavan & Co.’, a hardware merchant from the first half of the 19th century. It has a 38’ octagonal steel barrel, full length maple stock, ramrod in holder, and brass trigger guard, ramrod loops, and butt plate with patch box. The interior of the barrel has parallel grooves running straight from each corner of the octagon, rather than spiraled rifling. The Kentucky long rifle, also known as a Pennsylvania rifle, was a type popular among frontiersmen in western Pennsylvania and Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee during the early 19th century.
Condition
- the action was not working at the time of cataloging; the door to the patch box in the butt of the stock is riveted shut; minor rust near action; cosmetic wear including metal discoloration/patina and wood finish discoloration.
