An original 2004 oil painting on canvas titled Landscape by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The abstract landscape depicts rolling hills under a swirling sky, rendered in vivd hues reminiscent of the Fauvist style. The hills are comprised of undulating lines of varying length that traverse the composition horizontally, creating a sense of movement. The sky features overlapping circular shapes amidst broad waves of color. The work is signed, dated and titled to the verso. It is also marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed and is ready to hang with a wire. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
