An original oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015), from her Floral and Fauna Series. The painting features a composition that is divided into four quadrants. Each is filled with an abstract foliage motif, rendered in organic shapes of red, black, and light and dark green hues. The work is unsigned, and is marked to the verso with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed, ready to hang. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind. . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
