An oil on canvas portrait painting by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The painting depicts the portrait of a young woman with long red hair and a direct gaze, sitting sideways on a green ladder back chair, with her arms draped over the back. She is rendered in vivid color in the full spectrum of hues, reminiscent of the Fauvist style. The work is unsigned, and is marked to the verso with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The stretched canvas is presented unframed, awaiting your choice of presentation. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
