Carol J. Mathews Original Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas of the Number "6"
Item Details
An original 2014 oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015), from her Number Series. The abstract painting features a large dark blue number ‘6’ as the central motif. It is floating on a background of geometric shapes, including a grid that utilizes perspective to create a sense of space, rendered in a bright blue, green and fuchsia palette. Several dark blue circles outlined in green float around the composition. Numbers held specific meanings for the artist, and according to Mathews the number 6 represents ‘sick’. The work is unsigned, and is marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate to the verso. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed, ready to hang. A printed artist statement and a list of numbers and their symbolic meanings in Mathew’s art are attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
