An original oil painting on paper by contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The abstract painting features twisting branch-like shapes traversing the composition. They are rendered in painterly layers of muted green, brown and blue hues. The work is unsigned, and is marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate to the verso on the backing. Presented mounted to black, under glass, in a simple black composite frame that is ready to hang with a wire. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.

Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind. . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
