Van Hoople Oil and Gesso Impasto Painting on Board of Passageway with Fountain

A late 20th-century oil and gesso painting on board by American artist Van Hoople (b. 1934). The piece depicts an elaborate passageway with a central fountain and colorful stained glass windows, viewed from the perspective of an arched opening to the foreground. The image features a rich palette of red, orange, brown, yellow and blue hues, with areas of heavily textured impasto throughout. The work is signed ‘V Hoople’ in black ink to the lower left. It is presented without glass in a wooden frame with embossed decoration to the edges, fitted with hanging wire to the verso.

- chipping throughout the image area with areas of image loss; gesso is separating from board to the left of the fountain; stains, dirt and discoloration to fabric liner; edge wear, nicks and scuffing to frame; tears and moisture stains to frame’s backing paper.
