Joan B. N. van Gent Oil Painting on Canvas of Still Life with Purple Irises

A mid-century oil painting on canvas by Dutch artist Johannes Baptiste Nicholas van Gent, also known as Joan van Gent (1891 – 1974). The still life work depicts a narrow footed glass bud vase that holds greenery and purple irises with yellow accents. The vase is depicted adjacent to an East Asian porcelain bowl on a decorative wooden stand and a red velvet curtain. The work is signed ‘Joan. B.N. v. Gent.’ in dark red paint to the lower right. It is presented without glass in a cream wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- to fair; indentation and stretcher marks to canvas at top right; toning to painting and canvas verso; minor craquelure to painting visible under loupe; chips and wear to edges of frame, with larger chip to lower right at inside edge; no backing paper present; canvas has not been re-lined.
