An acrylic and mixed media composition wall hanging by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944 – 2016). The work is titled Obama got Osama and comprised of sticks, papier-mâché, linens, salt and pepper shaker eyes, and decorated with acrylic paint. Kowing draws his inspiration from this piece from the masks of the Yupik Nation. An artist’s label is present on verso.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
