The Velvet Study, 2013
Acrylic painting on board

17.5’ W x 11.5’ H

An acrylic painting on board titled The Velvet Study, created in 2013 by contemporary American artist Josh Agle (b. 1962), also known as ‘Shag’. Portrayed in black and shades of purple, this monochromatic work features a four-member band playing music with their large shadows projected behind them. The composition exemplifies the artist’s signature style of simple hard-edge shapes, silhouetted forms, and vivid colors. The work is signed ‘Shag’ to the lower right and to the verso. It is presented with violet fabric-covered matting and housed in a black composite frame. Additional handwritten inscriptions to the verso provide the title, date, and artist’s name. A descriptive label from the Jonathan LeVine Gallery is also adhered to the verso.

Josh Agle began as a freelance commercial illustrator in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has authored and illustrated books about tiki culture and cocktail recipes, influences which are stylistically evident in his fine art paintings. In 1987, the artist began signing his work ‘SHAG’, a pseudonym derived from the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last name. His work is characterized by Pop/commercial art aesthetics that utilizes flat vibrant colors and silhouetted figures, imbued with sly humorous content. Exhibitions of his work have been held internationally in the United States, Japan, Australia, and various countries in Europe and South America.
