An oil painting on board titled Mother’s Tears by listed Cherokee artist Talmadge Davis (1962-2005), created in 1998. This painting depicts four women in a forest, one of which is on her knees crying in front of a fresh grave. Dappled sunlight falls around them, which is rendered with exquisite highlights and passage. It is signed and dated in paint to the lower right. This painting is presented without glass in a wooden frame with gesso moulding and an inner linen border.
Talmadge Davis was born in Oklahoma and is known for his painting of Native American and military scenes influenced by his heritage and time in the army. His work has been in the Gilcrease Museum of Art in Tulsa and a traveling exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He also holds the titled of Master Artist by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee.
