An oil painting on canvas titled Judge & Jury by listed American western artist Mel Bradshaw (20th/21st Century), created in 1979. Set in a western desert landscape, this scene features a group of Native Americans on horseback who have just discovered a captive tied to the ground. The composition is portrayed with exquisite detail, from the beadwork on the figures’ clothing, to the individual feathers delineated in the regalia and headdresses. The painting is signed, dated, and titled to the lower left. It is presented in an elaborate gilt and gesso frame with a distressed finish, floral moulding, undulating edges, and a brown fabric liner. A metal plate is affixed to the lower center of the frame engraved with the title and artist’s name.
Mel Bradshaw was born in Durango, Colorado and has spent most of his life in the American West. Currently he resides in Arizona with his wife and continues to produce genre paintings based on his first-hand experiences of the landscape and lifestyle of his youth. Bradshaw’s paintings are displayed in several private collections and magazine publications including Old West and Western Horseman.
